From Cusco you fly to Puerto Maldonado, on the Amazonian side of Peru. From there, you embark on a canoe for an overnight travel up the Tambopata River. The river is too shallow for commercial cruises and expeditions, so you must make do with a more modest embarkation. All the better! Let’s step into an adventure.
Upriver you discover the wealth, and the enormous size of the Peruvian Amazon. In fact, the protected area you are now crossing is twice the size of Costa Rica. That brings some perspective. The farther you venture up the river, all traces civilisation begin to disappear and you go into the heart of the rainforest. Your only stop is overnight at a research facility. Tomorrow, you will venture even deeper.
After a long adventure in the river, you reach Tambopata Research Center. In the 80’s, the centre was established to study macaws and other wildlife. The scientists needed a place to live and so the lodge was built. Eventually, it was upgraded into a luxury lodge, but it still harbours a small scientific community. You join these researchers, and delve deeper into the mysteries of the rainforest.
You must eventually follow the river once again, but this time towards civilisation and the world. However, your heart is in this refuge of nature. Here, time seems to disappear and the worries of modern life seem to fade away. The life in the rainforest is one of marvelous simplicity, one needs only the courage to hop on that canoe.
