From Cape Town, you fly to Antarctica. Flying to the frozen continent is special in its own right. Not only do you avoid the Drake Passage, with its stormy and perilous waters, you also avoid a lot of dilly-dallying in the sea, and get straight to the adventure that has inspired your fantasies: walking in the great white wilderness, where only a few will ever travel.
You arrive at the camp. From the outside, the pods are a state-of-the-art, cutting-edge structures that can withstand the cold and the abuse of the Antarctic weather. However, on the inside the camp is a delight. It has an old-world feel from the golden days of exploration. You join fellow adventurers in the common pod, where you enjoy a dinner cooked by a renowned chef. It is clear that when it comes to adventure it is not only the where, but also the how.
A short fly west, and you find yourself standing amid thousands of Emperor Penguins. These charming birds constitute one of the greatest natural spectacles on the Planet. However, only a select few get to see it. You feel lucky. Double lucky, actually: you fly to the South Pole, and stand where only true adventurers dare venture. From where you stand, there is only north, and you are free to make your own path.
Despite the extreme conditions, Antarctica is varied and exciting place. You add a dash of adrenaline to the mix with outback skiing, ice cave rappelling and rock climbing, you walk at the feet of impressive mountains, and you honour the spirit of exploration: it is play, though very serious play.
