Arrival in Santiago de Chile. From this cosmopolitan and modern city, it is hard to imagine that one of the great wildernesses of the world is just within your grasp. Then you look to the Andes and discover what Neruda called “A vertical world,” and it starts to make sense. You will have enough time for ruggedness and adventure later on. For the time being, you enjoy the unpretentious luxury of criollo glamour: it is enamoured with freedom, the great outdoors, and self-reliance. Just what you hope to experience in the days to follow.
You arrive in Puerto Natales and from there the adventure truly begins. Aboard a sturdy Jeep, you make your way to some of the most pristine places in the world. The glaciers and the fjords are merely on the surface. You venture on horseback and on foot to discover caves, and landscapes where your photographic aspirations have a field day. You are in remote places, and still your Jeep can take you back to luxurious accommodations every night, where you tell the tale of your daily exploits and listen to those of other adventurers.
It is time to leave Chile and drive towards the Argentinian border. Here, you share the road only with the gauchos on horseback. The great expanses of Patagonia seem to be without end. However, thanks to your off-road vehicle you start to discover the features and one distinct emotion: freedom. You are free! For thousands of kilometres behind you, for thousands of kilometres ahead of you there is nothing but your will, and your curiosity. The lodges and inns you reach for the night take nothing away from the feeling, because from these new adventures spring, and as you canter in wild Patagonia with the gauchos, you become truly akin to the mindset of the pioneer: you are your own.
Eventually you reach Torres del Paine, one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and one that holds a lure for adventurers and extreme-sportsmen: Cerro Torre. As is ever in Patagonia, you have the choice to whatever you want. On this occasion, you chose to hike to base of the terrible granite wall. On the following days, you take a survey of the park on your Jeep and enjoy a horseback ride in the sunset light. Even if you must return to a world of constraints, you take with you the freedom of Patagonia, from now on a part of you.
