Arrival in Rio. The colourful city is full of exciting sounds and sights. It certainly merits its own detailed exploration. But for this adventure, you have your hopes set in the wilder side of Brazil. After a few days sightseeing and enjoying Rio, you head south to the Argentinian frontier, where the Iguassu falls welcome you as a sign of the immensity that is Brazil. You access the bird park near the river before it opens to the public. It’s a hands-on experience! You feed the birds and help the staff, which in turn share of their knowledge with you.
You travel to the remote region of Pantanal, an immense wetland and one of the most biodiverse areas in the planet. It is so inaccessible that you cannot access your lodge for the night by car… there’s only one way around it: to fly. The view from above is overwhelming. Your lodge is simple but comfortable. Now the adventure begins. You join a group of experts and conservationists to track the elusive Jaguar. This in an authentic wildlife experience, and it takes your guide’s full concentration and expertise to track the magnificent feline.
You have to admit that this experience is not for everyone. You move through the jungle foraging for food, and learning survival skills from ex-military experts. They know the jungle like the back of their hands. It is hard! But as you see the flames catch on the humid timber and the fire grows, you take comfort in your abilities. It’s going to be an interesting night in the Amazon.
You leave the rainforest a changed person. As you head to the northeast and the landscape begins to change, you wonder what else Brazil has in store. Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is an otherwordly landscape, perhaps the opposite of the rainforest. The endless sand dunes, invite mischief. After a 4x4 ride you take to the shores and enjoy the best kitesurfing in Brazil, if not the world. Happy and elated, you fly to Fernando de Noronha, where you have a last taste of the huge biodiversity of Brazil. Snorkelling in the pristine waters you discover beautiful reefs, shipwrecks inhabited by shy creatures. You can hardly wrap your mind around everything that you have seen in the last weeks, and you are sure Brazil could show you much, much more.
