Arrival in Kota Kinabalu, Northern Borneo. It is a city of cultural diversity and beautiful scenery. Mt. Kinabalu dominates de horizon, with its vertiginous ascent of well over 4 thousand metres. You take in the sights, meet the crew and relax. Your off-road adventure is just beginning. You drive north to Kudat, the northern tip of the island. It is quaint and charming. A prelude to the excitement that awaits.
Into the rainforest you go, to the heart of Kinabalu Park, where the giant mountain that gives the park its name creates a peculiar verticality that is reflected in the diversity of fauna and flora. Fleshy, odd looking carnivorous plants lie silently in wait. Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world is impressive, yes, but despite looking so alien, it doesn’t look out of place!
You drive east across geological wonders and lush vegetation. Many off-road challenges barr your path, but you and the crew find a way to overcome each and every one of them. The 4x4s are certainly put to the test. It is certainly an adventure, and there are many unknowns, which you must face as they come. That is the soul of exploration, and you couldn’t be happier. When you reach the dense rainforest of eastern Borneo, you leave let the vehicle be for a while and engage in some old-fashioned exploration: human powered. From a river cruise where you get a front-row view of the wildlife, to a canopy walk, which has been dubbed “the last frontier”. It is fitting, after all, this is an expedition to push the boundaries of travel.
You drive south across a balanced share of forest and dirt roads, to the ancient Valley of Danum. Here, the misty rainforest hides some of the world’s most impressive fauna, alongside others: the sumatran rhinoceros, and proboscis monkey, and one of the most charismatic of the all: orangutans. There is a distinct feeling that you are in a lost world, where history has only touched this land tangentially. Every kilometre you drive, it is a new discovery, and the substance itself of adventure.
